First Blood

Just the other day, I wrote about babyproofing so this post is horribly ironic. Well, life's like that, always full of surprises.

Yesterday, we were just hanging out in my room: Baby S, my daughter E, and my son K. We were talking about something I don't remember what when Baby S let out a big, fat cry followed by a loud scream from her mom. Accidentally, Baby S had slipped her hand inside the electric fan, and the blades caught her thumb. E hugged her tight, while screaming at me, "Mom, there's so much blood!" I grabbed a towel and started dabbing at Baby S's thumb to assess the damage. At first, I thought her finger had become all mangled up but fortunately, she only suffered minor cuts. I suppose she's just a bleeder like her mother.

I still remember when E bled through a number of towels so many years ago. I had just arrived home when E came to me crying. A playmate had accidentally pushed her, and her head hit the balustrade. Although I was about six or seven months pregnant then, I carried her to the bathroom and washed her head. There was so much blood but when I finally found the wound, it didn't look so bad. Of course, she had to have stitches, four if I remember right.

Baby S is fine and walking about. I think her mom and her uncles were more worried. The boys were hovering while I treated Baby S's cuts. Her mom had tears in her eyes. Surprisingly, I was calm throughout the whole episode. I had to be.

And guess what? After I treated her cuts, Baby S smiled and said, "Na na!" Her version of "No more!" Brave girl :)

  2. I remember the first time my first child bled! He was just starting to walk, fell and hit his head on a coffee table. The blood seemed unreal. How could this perfect baby boy have real blood! Yes, a first-time mom I definitely was! Baby #3, different story!

  3. Hi Veronica! Yes, it was scary. My boys kept saying that it was a good thing that the blades were made of plastic. And they're right.

Hey Dalia! The blood was disconcerting because there was just too much.

  5. Oh my! I'm glad she is okay and only had minor cuts. It's really scary when things like these happen to the kiddies.

  6. What a brave little girl! I'm glad that she was okay. When little ones get hurt, it hurts the adults worse than it does them.
